General JJ Singh

General Joginder Jaswant Singh, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC is a highly respected former Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army and a visionary military leader. Commissioned into the Maratha Light Infantry in 1964, he made history as the first Sikh to serve as the Chief of Army Staff, holding the post from January 2005 to September 2007.

With over four decades of exemplary service, General J.J. Singh held several critical command and staff roles, including General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command. His tenure was marked by a focus on modernization, joint operations, and strengthening counter-insurgency and border security frameworks, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast.

Post retirement, he was appointed as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh (2008–2013), where he played a key role in accelerating infrastructure development and promoting civil-military cooperation in a strategically important region.

A passionate advocate for adventure and outdoor pursuits, General J.J. Singh is also the Founding President of the Adventure Racing Federation of India, where he has championed the growth of endurance sports and adventure racing in the country.

Decorated with prestigious honours including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), he remains an influential voice in strategic affairs, leadership development, and youth engagement through adventure and discipline.
